The curriculum of Hillcrest is unique when compared to regular public schools. Students receive instruction in the following areas:

UNIQUE SKILLS/SOCIAL DEVELOPMENT

Students will be exposed to proper interaction, good manners, emotional development and exposure to the community.

PHYSICAL DEVELOPMENT

Basic coordination, movement, eye-hand coordination, balance, strength and endurance are the focus of our Physical Education classes. Therapy pool instruction is an integral part of our physical education program. Physical and Occupational therapy are provided for eligible students who have the need.

LANGUAGE DEVELOPMENT

Activities to increase the students' abilities to receive and understand information, as well as to express his or her own wants, needs, and desires.

ACADEMIC SKILLS

  • NUMBER CONCEPTS - Involving counting, numeral identification, basic addition/subtraction and writing numerals.
  • SIGHT WORD RECOGNITION - and comprehension (such as poison, danger, restroom, and so on).
  • TIME CONCEPTS - such as days of the week, months of the year, calendar usage, telling time.
  • MONEY CONCEPTS - involving identification and value of coins, making change, and simple purchases.
  • MEASUREMENT SKILLS - related to basic linear and volume measurements, reading thermometers, and so on.
  • FINE MOTOR SKILLS - such as writing alphabet letters, numerals, name, address, telephone number and other personal information.

LEISURE-TIME SKILL

Recreational skills to enhance the students' use of free time (music, art, dance, bowling, basketball and so on).

VOCATIONAL TRAINING

Specific instruction in commercial food service, general homemaking, vocational agriculture and related skills. All vocational efforts are for preparing the student for independent jobs in the community (unskilled, semi-skilled, manual labor and sheltered employment).

WORK-STUDY & JOB TRAINING

For selected students who exhibit readiness for job experiences in the community, with an emphasis upon job skills, attitudes and proper work habits.
