Intensive Unit for Behavior

PROGRAM DESCRIPTION

To ensure that all students have the opportunity to access educational services in the most appropriate and least restrictive environment, Hillcrest provides an Intensive Unit for Behavior program. This program is designed for students who have cognitive and/or developmental disabilities concurrent with the exhibition of moderate to severe maladaptive behaviors including, but not limited to, self-injury, physical aggression and potentially unsafe behaviors such as elopement or property destruction. Students in this program demonstrate significant difficulties with functional and effective communication, sensory processing, acquisition of social and daily living skills and emotional self-regulation. Teachers in this program work closely with the Behavior Support Team (BST). The ultimate goal for all students in this program is to learn and consistently demonstrate appropriate behavior and sensory self-regulation techniques in order to transition into a less restrictive classroom environment.
